My love is contagious, like anthrax
I saw
Diplo of Hollertronix fame spin records at
Sonotheque and it was a pretty glaze set. He’s very much a pop DJ as opposed to an out-and-out dance DJ, so he was more into a cool playlist and startling transitions (my favorite: “Move Bitch” into “Love Cats”) as opposed to sustaining a groove for a long time.
I was very disappointed that more people were not dancing. What’s the point of going to a bar and paying an $8 cover and then buying $3 domestic bottles of beer and then
sitting around and chatting rather than dancing? Maybe during the warm up DJ but not during the headliner. Fuck naw.
Diplo didn’t pull any punches trying to lure people out – “Bizarre Love Triangle,” “Pump Up the Jam,” “Where is My Mind?” – I felt like I was at a
Life During Wartime set. But nothing seemed to work.
The girls who were dancing were either doing that incredibly obnoxious fake-“fancy”-dancing with boyfriends or “ironically” grinding against each other. The latter sounds good in theory, but it really just feels crass and very unsexy. One very attractive girl did dance near me for a while and I got all sweaty and thrashed around like an eel caught in a tuna net.
Nonetheless, a good night! Go buy Diplo’s “Diplo Rhythm” for your own DJ set, or get a smart t-shirt from the Hollertronix website.
