We're goin' nowhere
Stylus did its
top 40 albums of 2004 – lots of surprises. You can read my rather blah blurb for
Cut Copy’s “Bright Like Neon Love.” I really should have voted with a bit more brain and a bit less heart.
work work work
The Absolute, Postitively No Questions Asked Top 40 Singles of 2004 list is done and the selection is pretty flash. I wrote a blurb for “The Show,” which is my #2 single of the year, right behind “Heartbeats,” which also made the Stylus list.
I also reviewed a
Daedelus album and have now participated in
two weeks of the Stylus Singles Going Steady Jukebox.
2004, year of disappointment
Felix Da Housecat – "Devin Dazzle and the Neon Fever"
It should have been a top five record - instead it's only a top 15 record. Still excellent, but Felix should stick to making new romantic jams with house inclinations instead of insepid girl-voxed electro-punk.
Scissor Sisters – "Scissor Sisters"
It's a very good album, but it's disappointing considering the songs they had that they didn't use.
Solvent – "Apples and Synthesizers"
Why is there singing on this record.
Miss Kittin – "I Com"
Half good material, half weird Germanic abrasion? Like Felix, she seems intent on partially sabotaging potential greatness.
Lil’ Flip – "U Gotta Feel Me"
A perfect example of a B+ single disc turned into a C+ double disc.
Wiley – "Treadin’ On Thin Ice"
It feels very soft compared to his uncompromising non-album productions and guest raps.
The Streets – "A Grand Don’t Come For Free"
A few great songs, a few average ones, a handful of bad ones and two of the worst songs to come out this year. If nothing else it made me appreciate "Original Pirate Material" a lot more.
Superpitcher – "Here Comes Love"
Respectable most of the way through, but the cover of "Fever" is a disaster.
Califone – "King Heron Blues"
It's too jammy and it lacks the coherence of "Quicksand and Cradlesnakes."
Wilco – "A Ghost Is Born"
A brilliant beginning, a krautrock number, a cock-rock-stomper and 10 minutes of white noise rounded out by a handful of sleepy Band stylings. I have this weird suspicion that years from now I may end up loving this album as some sort of "Metal Machine Music"-styled FU. But... not today.
Deerhoof – "Milk Man"
Heavy blah compared to "Apple O."
Cerberus Shoal – "Bastion of Itchy Preeves"
Mediocore rambling from a band that always dodged that so well.
I did like quite a lot from 2004. Lists tk.
