This goes out to all my baby mommasAfter a few hot weeks,
singles were slow this time around. Too much treacle R&B, and what are probably the two worst singles of the year.
Erick’s sanctimonious worst singles of 2005 thus far list:
10 Fantasia – Baby Momma
09 Gwen Stefani – Rich Girl
08 Eminem – Mockingbird
07 Will Smith – Switch
06 Lifehouse – You and Me
05 Three Doors Down – Let Me Go
04 Omarion – O
03 U2 – All Because of You
02 Jennifer Lopez ft. Fat Joe – Hold You Down
01 Hot Hot Heat – Goodnight Goodnight
I hesitate to totally condemn “Baby Momma” just yet because it may actually be a great song due to its
omgwtflol (roffle) value. I really hated “I’m a Wheel” when I first heard it and gradually grew to like it, so anything’s possible, right?
I wonder if Daft Punk got all panicked"Guy, are we supposed to be at James Murphy's house? Shit shit shit."
"It's not on my Blackberry Thomas."
"Shit. Shit. Guy, it's right here in the song. We're supposed to be in New York. Get plane tickets now."
:Rolls eyes: "Ok whatever you say Thomas."
RZA on NPRJust getting around to posting this now:
NPR’s interview with RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan. Some of the early material will be pretty familiar to Wu-watchers, but the second half of the interview has some interesting discussions of his childhood and kung fu.
He bangs the drumsSingles Going Steady will be up soon. Trust me, it’s worth the wait. Until then, read Todd Hutlock's bombdilly article on
early singles of the Creation label.
In other news, Chicago’s troglodyte critic Jim Derogatis
wanders into a musical minefield. I’d deconstruct the article's weaknesses, but they’re so glaring it would almost be condescending for me to think anyone reading this can’t figure them out on their own.
But don't download, go out and buy the recordVery rosy week for singles. After further consideration I would probably knock “Do Somethin’” down to a 7 (the other writers have a point about it being something of a “Toxic” rewrite) but I think these 3 ratings are harsh for a song that has a lot of bounce and charm. The most important song of the week, “Hate It or Love It,” received an appropriately high 7.8 average with some unusual consensus from a bunch of writers who rarely split in the same direction on hip-hop singles.
Destination: EarthJBTV shows new music videos in Chicago.
Stars – “Ageless Beauty” Pariah girl fits in at party by revealing her quasi-mystical powers. The band rocks in the shadows. Is the singer hot, or not? The darkness makes us unsure.
Low Millions – “Eleanor” Girls sing along to QT boys and their polite rocking. The singer is too sexually drained to write good songs after acquiring 80 girlfriends all weirdly named Eleanor.
The Bravery – “Honest Mistake” Interpol but with a zany mousetrap game. Some domino master got a huge paycheck for this video. Fashion-wise it looks like Visage had a yard sale.
Jimmy Chamberlin Complex – “Loki Cat” I wish I could write “THE RETURN OF BILLY CORGAN” in such a way that it was clear to readers that I was referencing Andre 3000 saying “THE RETURN OF BILLY OCEAN.”
