Van Halen's version of “Dancing in the Street” is the best versionIt just pulses on this off-kilter irradiated disco beat with that cowbell twitch wedged in. And Roth’s delivery is completely convincing; this guy really would be dancing in the street, swinging, swaying, fighting with some cops after they try to arrest him for holding up traffic.
I love the Kinks but their ’65 version is pretty white bread. Jagger and Bowie’s version is famously lousy (Bowie was never meant to do something so guileless). The Everly Brothers sing it like they’re searching for a good table at Sizzler, not for “a brand new beat.” The Vandellas version is totally classic and
almost as good as Van Halen’s, but not quite as convincing.
"I could sell raid to a bug / I'm a hustla / I could sell salt to a slug"SGS cancelled this week. What you missed:
Cassidy: "Come on Slug, this shit is great."
Slug: "I don't know Cassidy... I heard it will make me shrivel up and die."
Cassidy: "What, you scared man?"
Slug: "No! I'll... I'll buy a tablespoon."
